I’m Sam, the lawyer behind Trusty Property Law.

I've been a lawyer for about 10 years now and I like property law because generally I get to help people with pretty satisfying live events. Calling a client to tell them they can pick up the keys to their first home is pretty cool!

I come from a family of teachers, so I also love taking the time to explain processes and documents to clients, so they can feel like they know what's going on and can make informed decisions.

To be honest, the part I like least about lawyering is timing phone calls and sending big bills. That's why at Trusty I prefer to work off value-based pricing, which I learnt from my first boss. Rather than turning on a timer every time I read an email, we agree on a price for work at the start of the job, and unless something changes, that's the bill you get - no surprises.

During the Covid lockdowns, we learnt a lot about remote working and meetings. Regulations have finally caught up, allowing us to do most things remotely, but many law firms seem to have defaulted back to all paper files and in person meetings. Working for myself gives me the flexibility to meet clients when and where is convenient for both of us. Hopefully this means I'll be able to deal with clients from all over Aotearoa, rather than limiting myself to Wellington.

At Trusty Property Law, you'll deal directly with me from start to finish. I don't expect you to know everything already - there are no dumb questions, and if I need something from you, I'll let you know.

I've gone through most of the experiences that I assist with, either personally or through my years spent on charity boards. My partner Carl and I just bought our first home together. I even made him set up a trust with me, just to keep things complicated.

If I'm not working from home in Island Bay, under Baxter's supervision, I'm in my shared office space in Central Wellington, at a board meeting, or the hockey turf. Or at the monthly Rainbow Wellington drinks. That's my socialising time - you should come along.

I look forward to working with many new clients, so I hope you'll get in touch and let me know how I can help!
